A light garden style rain falling in Shelton as I write this.  I have two umbrellas, wise idea to bring one if you have one.

April 24, 2025 7:52 AM

The weather channel has been sending me notices since last night at 5 that we should expect rain at this time, at this time, at this time.  Not a drop folks.  Not one drop of rain fell over night.  The sidewalk is dry.
Here is the forecast for today:

Weather Channel:  Expect rain (90% chance) from 10 am to 11 am.  Believe it or not, I haven't a clue.

Throughout the day the weather channel has the rain chances between 24 and 45%.

If you shop today, wear shoes you don't mind getting wet and bring an umbrella just in case.

WE WILL BE OPEN ALL DAY TODAY!

April 23rd, 2025 6:04 AM

There is a 40% chance of rain today but we will be open today, regular hours, 9am to 7pm.  There is a slight chance of some thunderstorms developing today so if there is hail anywhere close to us, all product will be covered and protected.  I will post here at our weather blog with updates throughout the day.

April 19, 2025 6:19 AM

We are on schedule to open on Monday April 21st.  We still have lots of plants to move to the highway due to the wind.  It is hard to move product to our retail site when the wind is blowing 40 mph because it rips the tags off of the pot.  Last night at around 8:00 pm the wind just died!  I mean it went from 20-30 mph to dead.  That 20-30 mile per hour north wind blew for 36 hours straight.  Weather channel claimed that March was the second windiest March on record, and I believe April could end up the same way.  I'm literally sick of the wind.  It's amazing how much more wind the strong winds make for us as we try to set up the store.  It literally attempts to blow the place apart.  Remember we have 13 greenhouses at our retail site and they are covered with the same material a sandwich bag is made of just thicker material.  There seems to always be maintenance at home on buildings.  The wind sucks!

Breanna and I will work most of today moving product to our retail site so hopefully by 6:00 pm we will be stocked with plants.  Kelli will work most of the day printing the last of the pricing tags and getting all our garden decor set up and priced.  We do have some very cool garden decor for 2025.

OUR VEGETABLE PLANTS WILL NOT ARRIVE HERE UNTIL AT LEAST MAY 5.  I KNOW IT, TICKS PEOPLE OFF BUT FOR US, THAT'S THE WAY IT WORKS.  VEGETABLES COME LATER.

We always appreciate your support.

April 15, 2025

Greetings from Open Air Nursery, East Highway 30 in Shelton, Nebraska.  I wanted to get out a quick reminder of our weather blog.  We update it often and if you are driving any distance at all to our location, I encourage you to check it before you come.  We are truly an "open air" facility.  When we have inclement weather, there are times that dictate we close early, open late, or rarely we close for the entire day.  Let me fill you in:

1.  If it's raining we will be open UNLESS we are flooding.  Five, six, inches of rain and we can flood.  Years ago we had 13 inches of rain over night and at 6:00 am in the morning we had 10 inches of water at our cash register counter.  Luckily, we drain fast and were open by noon on that day.  If we've had some rain, I highly suggest you wear your rain boots or our old sneakers because at times you might walk in a bit of water.  Again, we drain fast.  Within an hour after a rain we are usually dry.

2.  Freezing weather makes things more challenging.  If it is 37 degrees or lower at night, we cover every crop on the place.  This takes us some time to uncover in the morning because we can't start until the temps are above freezing.  There might be a few mornings we open at 9:30, maybe 10.  Check this blog because we update often.

3.  Please watch the weather forecast before you come.  If the tornado whistle is blowing, we won't be here and we strongly suggest you aren't here either.  Our very first year open was 34 years ago.  The tornado whistle was blowing and four ladies walked in the door.  I said ladies you realize that is the tornado whistle.  One of them looked at me and said, "Do you mind if we grab a cookie before we go".  We take severe weather pretty serious around here.  If we believe there might be hail coming, we will do everything to cover and protect our crop.

Please check our weather blog often.  We try to update if any issues arise that might change our business hours.

Thank you.
